How to Descale Your Keurig Duo Step by Step (With Video) ☕️

Struggling to find out how to descale your Keurig Duo coffee machine?

Since moving to Stuttgart, Germany, I’ve needed to descale our Keurig machine much more than when we lived in Novi, Michigan.

The water is much harder here than in the Great Lakes.

And I’ve found myself looking for this particular Keurig Canada descaling video more often.

How-To Video (By Keurig Canada)

Let’s get straight to the point and watch this how-to video.

Before You Descale Your Keurig Duo

  • For the carafe, make sure there are no ground coffee or filter left in the basket.

  • For the single serve, remove any leftover K-cups.

Step-by-Step Guide on How To Descale Your Keurig Duo

  1. Empty the water reservoir (water container).

  2. Pour the complete bottle of the Keurig descaling solution into the empty reservoir.

  3. Fill up the empty descaling bottle with water, then pour it in the reservoir.

  4. Turn on the brewer.

  5. Press the carafe button (coffee pot).

  6. Brew a 12 cup pot.

  7. Wait for the pot to complete ‘brew’, then pour the contents in the sink.

  8. Press & hold the ‘red light’ to turn off the heating plate.

  9. Wait 30 minutes (to let the brewer rest).

  10. Rinse the carafe & the reservoir in the sink.

  11. Fill up the reservoir with tap water until the “12” line.

  12. Brew another 12 cup pot.

  13. Repeat 3 more times.

How to Clear the “DESCALE” Light on Your Keurig Duo?

It’s simple! Press and hold the 8 & the 10 buttons for ~3 seconds until the “DESCALE” message disappears.

How Often Should You Descale Your Keurig Duo?

To keep your coffee brewing deliciously, it’s recommended to descale it every 3 months.

From our experience, we just descale it once our Keurig Duo shows the ‘DESCALE’ notification.

My guess is that the 3 months is based on brewing 1 carafe a day. But if you’re a coffee lover and brew 2 pots a day, then you can expect to descale sooner than 3 months.

Since we moved from the Great Lakes to Germany, we noticed that descaling is even more important with the harsh water here in Stuttgart.

What If My Keurig Duo Stops Brewing (During the Descaling)?

If your tap water is rougher (or if you haven’t descaling periodically), you might notice that descaling your Keurig Duo might result in more gooey things.

This means that the descaling is working.

But there’s also a chance that the brewer won’t descale properly. This is likely due to the gooey stuff getting stuck in the water reservoir or the pipes.

I can tell you what won’t work...and that’s constantly brewing over and over because that will only cause your Duo to overheat!

What works is being patient.

You can start by rinsing your water reservoir. Then clean the point where the water drips into the machine.

Wait for your Duo to cool down before running another brew.

Chances are, the descaled solution results in some goo that’s just struggling to make its way through the pipes.

Takeaways

  • Descale every 3 months or when your Keurig Duo shows the ‘DESCALE’ alert.

  • Rougher water may require more frequent descaling.

  • If you Keurig Duo stops brewing during the descaling, be patient & follow the process.
