What was supposed to be a routine layover turned into multiple cancelled flights — and an unexpected few days in Amsterdam.

Setting the Situation

It was the start of the new year, and we were on a familiar multi-leg route from Detroit to Stuttgart via Amsterdam. We had a planned 90-minute layover.

That layover stretched to six hours. Then overnight. Then into a second day. And eventually, a third.

Before we even left for Detroit, our original connecting flight had already been cancelled. We rebooked onto a later connection, boarded on time — and then sat on the plane for four hours before that flight was cancelled too. Our checked bags were inaccessible, and no one could tell us when we’d fly next.

At some point, surrounded by thousands of stranded passengers, we stopped waiting for clarity. Instead, we decided to reclaim the day: book a hotel in the city, reset, and make the best of being stuck in one of Europe’s most beautiful places.

That’s when we booked two nights at NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market through the Booking.com app.

Why We Booked This Hotel

After a day like that, our priorities were simple.

Location-wise, we wanted to be in the heart of the city — somewhere walkable to food, supermarkets, and transit, with easy access back to Amsterdam Centraal and Schiphol when flights resumed.

Hotel-wise, it needed to fit within airline reimbursement limits, have strong cleanliness ratings, and feel predictable. NH Collection checked all of those boxes.

Getting to the Hotel (From Schiphol)

We purchased a 72-hour public transit pass and took public transportation from Schiphol to the city.

One thing to note: if you take the express train, you’ll need a separate ticket — it’s not included in standard multi-day transit passes. We opted for the slower but simpler route, which worked fine given our state of mind.

A Winter Snapshot of Amsterdam

Stress aside, Amsterdam under snow was beautiful.

Sidewalks and bridges were icy — sometimes uncomfortably so — especially over the canals. What surprised us most was seeing locals continue to bike through it all. Some slipped and fell; others pedaled on like nothing had changed.

The snow lifted our mood briefly… until our rebooked flight was cancelled again. And again.

Still, the city itself helped soften the situation.

The Room

Room type: Superior Double / Twin Room

With our Booking.com Genius status, we received a small discount, which helped given the circumstances.

The room was exactly what we needed. Calm, comfortable, and quiet. We had a pleasant street view, and despite crowds outside in the evenings, noise was never an issue.

Temperature control worked well, the bed was comfortable, and the room didn’t demand attention — which mattered after a chaotic travel day. We slept well and recovered enough to handle whatever came next.

The Hotel’s Location

Being stuck somewhere like Amsterdam made a big difference.

From the hotel, everything we needed was within a 5–10 minute walk:

  • H&M for basic clothing

  • Supermarkets for toiletries, water, and snacks

  • Tram and metro stops

  • Restaurants, canals, and central sights

We walked to dinner, wandered the streets, rode the tram two minutes from the hotel, and even walked to the Red Light District in under 15 minutes (just to check it out!).

For first-time visitors — especially under pressure — the location is hard to beat.

What Helped More Than Expected

The hotel’s central location reduced decision fatigue. Groceries, transit, food, and basic errands were all easy, which mattered more than amenities in this situation.

What We’d Warn Others About

Nothing to complain about inside the hotel. Staff were kind, the room was clean, and the space felt well maintained.

The only real caution had nothing to do with the hotel itself: during snowy conditions, Amsterdam sidewalks and bridges can be extremely slippery. We didn’t notice much salting, so good footwear helps.

Who This Hotel Is Best For

Best for:

  • First-time visitors to Amsterdam

  • Travellers dealing with flight disruptions

  • Anyone wanting to explore the city on foot and by public transit

Less ideal for:

  • Travellers looking for large rooms or resort-style facilities

Bottom Line

Would we stay here again? Absolutely.

In fact, for our next trip to Amsterdam, we already plan to book NH Collection Flower Market again. It turned a stressful, uncertain situation into something manageable — and even enjoyable — which is about the highest praise we can give a hotel.
