Belle Epoque Hotel Victoria in Kandersteg: A Classic Swiss Stay for Oeschinensee Hiking

Quick Take

If you’re planning a hiking trip to Kandersteg and want a hotel that’s central, walkable, and full of character, Belle Epoque is a strong choice.

It’s not the most modern stay—but for location, space, and overall experience, it delivers where it matters.

If you’re wondering what Kandersteg feels like—this is it!

Why We Visit Kandersteg

We were already planning time in Lauterbrunnen, so Kandersteg felt like an easy add-on from Interlaken Ost.

But it wasn’t random—we specifically wanted to hike Oeschinensee and try the rodelbahn.

We treated this as a short, active stop.

One full day for hiking, another for exploring, then ending each day with a relaxed dinner outdoors.

We stayed right in the center of the village, next to the main church.

Everything was walkable, which made getting around simple.

The mornings stood out the most—fresh mountain air, quiet surroundings, and church bells ringing at the top of the hour.

It felt like the kind of Swiss village experience you hope for before arriving.

Why We Booked This

We looked at a few cheaper options, especially since Belle Epoque was on the higher end during peak summer.

But we weren’t looking for something hostel-like—we wanted a balance between cost and quality. This felt like the right fit.

The hesitation came down to price versus the older, more classic feel.

It wasn’t the cheapest option, and it didn’t have that modern look.

But in peak summer in Switzerland, waiting didn’t feel like a smart move.

It made more sense to book early than risk worse options later.

Looking back, it was the right call.

We paid 464 CHF for 2 nights in August, which felt fair for Switzerland—especially with the central location and breakfast included.

Getting There

If you’re arriving from Interlaken Ost, try to sit on the left side of the train—the views are noticeably better.

Once you get to Kandersteg, getting out of the station can be a bit confusing, especially with luggage.

You can either stay at street level or go down, but Google Maps doesn’t clearly show which way to go.

We followed the crowd and hoped for the best… and ended up taking the longer route.

If you’re carrying a lot, it might be worth calling your hotel ahead of time.

Otherwise, just follow the crowd toward town—it’ll get you there, even if it’s not the most direct path.

Expectation vs Reality

We expected something a bit more modern.

In reality, it leaned much more classic—hardwood floors that creaked, slightly lower ceilings (even for us), and that distinct cabin-like wooden smell.

It wasn’t what we expected—but it didn’t bother us.

We came to Kandersteg to be outdoors, and the character of the hotel actually made it feel more like an authentic Swiss stay.

The Room

The space and the balcony mattered most.

There was enough room for our large, American-sized suitcases—which isn’t always a given in Europe.

And the balcony came in handy after hiking days—we used it to air-dry our outfits and even our North Face shoes.

The only drawback was the older room smell, and we did notice a few cobwebs on the ceiling.

Atmosphere & Who It’s For

The overall vibe leans into a classic, almost Victorian-style elegance.

At breakfast, we were surprised to see some guests dressed in full Victorian-style outfits.

Unexpected—but honestly, a fun detail that made the experience more memorable.

This place fits couples especially well—particularly if you’re planning to hike Oeschinensee and want a central base with a bit more space, like a room with a balcony.

The breakfast buffet is also a highlight, with plenty of options and outdoor seating with mountain views.

It’s not a cheap stay, but you do get what you pay for.

This isn’t a luxury hotel like the Ritz-Carlton—it sits more on the upper end of what you’d expect in a Swiss village like Kandersteg.

If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, there are definitely cheaper options out there.

TwoFoodies Tips

If you’re booking this hotel, try to book early—especially in peak summer—since availability tightens quickly.

It also helps to go in with the right expectations. This is a classic, old-world stay—not a modern hotel.

One thing we didn’t expect was how much balcony proximity matters.

One night, our neighbors were smoking, and the smell drifted into our balcony—which was pretty frustrating.

Final Decision

We would absolutely stay here again—especially for another summer hiking trip or even just to ride the rodelbahn again.

Next time, we’d be more efficient with our time.

We’d already know where to stay, how to get around, and things like when the last gondola runs—which makes a big difference on a short trip.

If you’re planning a hiking trip to Kandersteg and want something central, walkable, and full of character, this is an easy yes.
