Hotel Regina Wengen Review: We Stayed Twice (Summer & Winter)

Quick Take

If you’re visiting Wengen and want a classic Swiss hotel with incredible valley views, Hotel Regina is a strong choice—especially for a first trip.

It’s not modern.

But it delivers where it matters: location, atmosphere, and a reliable base for both hiking and skiing.

Best for: Scenic stays, first-time Wengen visits, hikers & skiers

Less ideal for: Modern luxury, easy luggage access, hot summer nights

Why We Came Back

We stayed at Hotel Regina Wengen twice—once in late summer for hiking, and again in winter for a ski trip.

The first time, we optimized for two things: location and value.

It’s one of the first hotels you reach from the Wengen train station, and every room comes with a balcony overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. That combination is hard to beat.

But what brought us back wasn’t just the view.

It was the people.

During our first stay, the staff left a lasting impression—helpful hiking recommendations, tips on local weather apps, and consistently warm service throughout breakfast and dinner.

By the time we left, it felt familiar.

That’s what made it an easy decision to return.

Summer Stay — Hiking Days in the Jungfrau Region

We came to Wengen to experience the Jungfrau region at its best—green valleys, open trails, and long hiking days around Lauterbrunnen.

Mornings started early.

We’d step out onto the balcony, check the weather rolling over the valley, and decide where to go.

Within minutes, we were out the door—day packs ready, boots on, heading toward the train or trailheads.

By midday, we were deep into the region—Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, or somewhere along the ridgelines.

Coming back felt calm.

After hours of movement, everything slowed down. The quiet, the cooler air, and that balcony view—it reset the entire day.

Winter Stay — Ski Trip Reality

Winter felt like a different version of the same hotel.

This time, everything shifted to logistics.

Within 30 minutes of arriving, we dropped off our ski and snowboard gear in the hotel’s storage room and started mapping out our daily flow.

Mornings were slower. More deliberate. Layers, gear, boots.

We’d make our way down toward the train station to access the lifts.

The downhill walk in the morning? Easy.

The return? Not so much.

After a full day of skiing, walking back uphill in ski boots—sometimes on fresh snow—was easily the hardest part of the day. We often found ourselves holding onto the railings just to stay stable.

But once inside, the pace changed again.

Warm, quiet, and calm—the hotel brought everything back to center.

The Room — What Actually Matters

We stayed in a Double Room with Balcony, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley.

And that view carries the experience.

At night, the sky opened up—stars and moonlight sitting right above the valley. It’s one of those details you don’t forget.

Sleep quality was solid. No issues there.

The main tradeoff is temperature.

There’s no air conditioning, so in summer you’ll need to open the balcony doors for airflow. On warmer nights, that can be uncomfortable.

In winter, though, it works perfectly. The heating was more than enough.

Overall, the room feels classic, not modern.

Plenty of storage, a large closet, and a functional bathroom—but don’t expect updated interiors.

Breakfast — One of Our Favorite Parts

Breakfast ended up being one of the highlights of staying at Hotel Regina Wengen.

In the summer, we always chose to sit outside.

Coffee, fresh air, and a full view over the Lauterbrunnen valley—it almost didn’t feel real. It’s one of those moments where you slow down without trying.

In winter, everything moves indoors.

But the experience still holds up. The buffet had plenty of variety, and after a cold morning—or before heading out to ski—it felt like a reliable, satisfying start to the day.

Different setting. Same routine we looked forward to.

Location — The Reality You Should Know

This is where expectations matter.

From the Wengen train station, it’s about a 2-minute walk to the hotel entrance—but another 5-minute uphill walk to the main lobby.

And it’s steep.

With regular luggage, it’s manageable—but not easy.

With ski gear, it becomes a challenge.

In winter, especially with snow, that uphill walk becomes part of your daily routine. We often had to hold onto the rails just to stay stable.

The hotel does offer a luggage service (small wagon pickup from the station), and we’d strongly recommend using it.

After long hiking days in the summer, the walk didn’t bother us much.

In winter, it definitely did.

What the Stay Feels Like

“This hotel feels like stepping into a classic Swiss mountain stay—where the views do most of the talking.”

It’s historic, not modern—and that’s part of its appeal.

Sitting slightly elevated on the mountainside, it offers wide, open views over the Lauterbrunnen valley that are hard to match.

In winter, with fresh snow and lit trees around the property, it genuinely feels a bit magical.

What We Loved

  • Balcony views over Lauterbrunnen valley

  • Friendly, welcoming staff

  • Strong base for both hiking and skiing

  • On-site ski storage

  • Newly added spa area

What We’d Think Twice About

  • No air conditioning (noticeable in summer)

  • Steep uphill walk from the station

  • Interiors feel dated

  • Comparable price to more modern hotels

Who This Is Perfect For

Book this if:

  • You want a classic Swiss hotel experience

  • You care more about views and atmosphere than modern interiors

  • You’re planning active days (hiking or skiing)

  • You value friendly, local service

Skip this if:

  • You want a modern, design-forward hotel

  • Air conditioning is important to you

  • You prefer easy, flat access with luggage

  • You want ski-in/ski-out convenience

One Thing to Know Before Booking

The uphill walk is real.

It’s short—but steep.

In summer, it’s manageable. In winter, with snow or ski gear, it becomes part of your daily effort.

If that’s a concern, plan ahead and use the hotel’s luggage service.

Would We Stay Again?

Yes—but, it depends.

Staying here twice gave us exactly what we needed: a reliable base in Wengen with incredible views and a consistent, welcoming experience.

For a third stay, though, we’d probably try something different—just to explore another side of Wengen.

Places like Beausite Park Hotel & Spa stood out to us for being more modern, with expanded amenities and a more refined dining experience.

That said, we’d still confidently recommend Hotel Regina—especially for a first visit.
