NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market Review â When a Flight Cancellation Turns Into a City Stay
Quick Take
If you suddenly find yourself stuck in Amsterdam and need a central, no-stress place to stay, NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market is a strong, reliable option.
Itâs not the kind of hotel you plan your trip around.
But when things go sideways, it puts you exactly where you need to beâclose to everything, without adding more friction to an already stressful situation.
Best for: Unexpected stays, first-time visits, short city trips
Less ideal for: Luxury-focused stays, design-driven experiences
Why We Were There
This wasnât a planned Amsterdam trip.
It was a layover that turned into a situation.
In January 2026, our connecting flight from Amsterdam to Stuttgart was cancelledâbut not before we had already boarded. We sat on the plane for four hours, only to be told the flight wasnât happening.
And to make things worse, our checked bags werenât released back to us.
So now we were stuck.
Two backpacks. Carry-ons with electronics & books. No clothes.
Why We Booked This Hotel
We didnât have the luxury of time.
KLM gave us a guideline:
âŹ125 per person, per night â âŹ250 total for both of us.
That immediately narrowed our options.
At first, airport hotels seemed like the obvious choiceâbut they were filling up fast, and prices were rising just as quickly.
So we made a decision:
If weâre stuck here, we might as well stay somewhere central.
We booked this in under 10 minutes.
We werenât comparing optionsâwe just needed a hotel in the city that fit within the budget KLM gave us.
Thatâs how we landed on NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market.
For roughly the same price, we could walk to restaurants, shops, and landmarksâand more importantly, quickly replace the basics we didnât have.
Because all of our clothes were somewhere between Amsterdam and Stuttgart.
Getting There (Where Things Got Confusing)
Getting from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the hotel wasnât difficultâbut it wasnât as straightforward as we expected.
We bought the GVB 72-hour public transport pass, thinking it would cover everything.
But it only covers trams, buses, and metroânot the airport train.
That distinction isnât obvious when youâre tired and just trying to get into the city.
We eventually figured it out using Google Maps and made our way to the hotel, but it took a bit of trial and error.
Tip:
Stick to metro and tram routesâor plan to buy a separate train ticket from the airport.
Also, when using Google Maps, avoid routes that rely on NS train lines (often labeled with âNâ or intercity-style routes) unless youâre planning to buy a separate ticket. Those arenât covered by the GVB pass.
First Impressions
There was an immediate sense of relief.
After everything that happened, we just needed a clean place to resetâshower, regroup, and step out for a proper meal.
The area felt lively, but not overwhelming.
The Flower Market area had energy, but in a relaxed wayâpeople walking, biking, and enjoying the evening. Not rowdy. Not overly touristy. Just⌠comfortable.
It didnât feel premium.
But it felt right.
The Room (Real-World Comfort)
The room was exactly what we needed.
Quiet, comfortable, and no surprises.
We had a room facing the Flower Market, but it stayed peacefulâespecially in the evenings with the windows closed.
Sleep quality was solid.
During the day, you could hear light city noise in the background, but nothing disruptive.
Itâs not a standout âwowâ roomâbut in this situation, reliability mattered more than anything else.
Location & Daily Flow
This is where the hotel really delivers.
Once we dropped off our backpacks and carry-ons, we went straight outânot for sightseeing, but for essentials.
Within minutes, we were at H&M picking up clothes, socks, and underwear. Then to a nearby Albert Heijn for toiletries, water, and snacks.
Everything we needed was within reach:
Clothing (H&M) â ~4-minute walk
Food and cafĂŠs (including Blin Queen) â ~4-minute walk
Transit â ~5-minute walk
We ended up walking almost everywhere.
Even when we tested the tram, the total time (including waiting) was about the same as walking.
And in winter conditionsâwith icy streetsâwe were still able to get around easily.
This location didnât just make things convenientâit made our unexpected stay in Amsterdam liveable.
If we had stayed near the airport, even simple tasks like buying clothes or finding a restaurant would have been a process.
Staying here made everything easier.
Service & Experience
This was a smooth, no-issues stay.
No standout momentsâbut no friction either.
And in a situation like this, thatâs exactly what you want.
What Worked / What Didnât
What we liked:
Central location that simplifies everything
Immediate access to clothing, food, and essentials
Quiet, comfortable room
What weâd flag:
Not a luxury or design-forward stay
Area has steady foot traffic and can feel busy at times
Practical Tips
The GVB pass does not cover the airport trainâplan accordingly
Stay central if your time is limitedâit makes a big difference
You can walk to most essentials from this areaâno need to over-rely on transit
Who Itâs For
Perfect for:
First-time visitors to Amsterdam
Travelers dealing with delays or unexpected stays
Couples who want a central, efficient base
Less ideal for:
Travelers looking for a quieter, more residential area
Those who prefer luxury or boutique-style hotels
Final Thoughts
At that point, what mattered most was having a place in the city where we could resetâa home base to regroup, recharge, and figure out our next steps.
This wasnât a hotel we planned around.
It was a decision we made quickly, under pressure.
And it turned out to be the right one.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, donât panic. Understand your budget constraints, stay central, and focus on making things easier for yourself.
